Carly Nelson ’25

“The faculty in the department have played a crucial role in preparing me for a career in education. Through their expertise, mentorship, and hands-on teaching experiences, they have equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the field of education.”

As someone who has felt a lifelong calling to teach and work with children, Carly came to Gustavus knowing that she wanted to major in Elementary Education. Since then, she has found a very supportive and positive environment in the Education Department.

In her classes, Carly feels that she is encouraged to do her best while also knowing that she has a network of support in her peers and professors. She has felt particularly supported by the faculty within the Education Department, who are dedicated to providing the best preparation for future teachers and making their students’ voices heard.

Of the Education Faculty, she says, “I truly believe that each one of the professors have provided me with the necessary tools and guidance to become a confident and effective future educator”. Through the faculty’s endless support and genuine care for their students’ success, Carly feels that she will be able to provide these things to her own future students.

She has also appreciated the hands-on nature of the Education Department, in which she has had opportunities to engage in various internship and volunteer opportunities in the community. These experiences have further enhanced her understanding of effective teaching practices in a real classroom setting, which has made her feel more confident in her abilities going forward.

Overall, Carly says the department has “instilled in me the confidence and passion to pursue my career goals wholeheartedly.”

Outside of the Education Department, Carly is also involved on campus with the Softball Team, Student Educators Association, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Pediatric Cancer Outreach Crew, Fellowship of Student Athletes, and Proclaim.
