Softball Shut Down by St. Kate’s

The Gustavus softball team couldn’t get the bats going Saturday at the MSU-Mankato Dome, dropping a doubleheader to St. Catherine by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

MANKATO, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team couldn’t get the bats going Saturday at the MSU-Mankato Dome, dropping a doubleheader to St. Catherine by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. The Gusties drop to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in the MIAC, while the Wildcats improve to 14-10 overall and 7-3 in the league.

After two scoreless innings, St. Kate’s plated three runs in the third after three hits. The fourth and fifth innings passed without a run before the Wildcats added three more runs in the sixth on three hits and an error.

The Gusties scored their lone run of the day in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Ruud (Jr., Savage) reached on an error and scored on another error.

Isabel Reuvers (So., Medford) led a quiet offense, batting 2-for-3. Piper Otto (So., Brooklyn Park) took the pitching loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and two strikeouts in five and two-third innings. Amara Packey (Sr., Fridley) pitched the rest of the game and did not give up a hit.

The second game started as a pitcher’s duel with each starter facing just two batters over the minimum through three innings. The Wildcats got to Chloe Smallfield (Fy., Papillion, Neb.) in the fourth with two runs on a pair of hits.

St. Kate’s added a run in the sixth with a ground-rule RBI double and then plated three more insurance runs in the seventh on three hits and two errors.

Smallfield took the loss after three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two strikeouts. Payton Belt (So., Indianola, Iowa) finished the final four frames with three earned runs on five hits and a strikeout.

Four different Gusties had one hit apiece.

Gustavus next travels to Concordia for a MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
