NORTHFIELD, Minn./BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams continued to make forward strides Saturday at Carleton’s Meet of the Hearts and at day two of the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic.
Carleton Meet of the Hearts
The Gustie men were highlighted by throwers Andrew Bradley and Josh Beiswanger. Bradley won the shot put with a distance of 46-5.5 while Beiswanger won the weight throw with a mark of 53-5.75. Less than a day removed from nearly setting the school 3000-meter record, Henry Hinchcliffe took second place in the mile with a time of 4:24.51. Korrigan Diercks placed third in the 800-meter at 2:02.67. Nick Barrett ran a 6.81 in the 55-meter to place sixth.
For the women, Caitlyn Storley and Avery Beyer went 3-4 in the 600-meter at 1:51.71 and 1:53.07. Kate Carlson finished fifth in the 55-meter with a time of 7.62. And Nicole Nelson took sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 42-3.25.
“Technique, race strategy and execution are improving with a lot of our athletes which is leading to many personal bests and season bests,” Head Coach Aaron Lund said. “We have a well-rounded team with a lot of talent and depth. It was great to see some true competitiveness and desire to succeed from our team. We established a lot of positive momentum today and I know our team is super excited for the weeks ahead.”
SDSU Indoor Classic
Elizabeth Donnelly was the story of the day as she won the 600-meter with a school record time of 1:33.38. The previous record was held by Sara Moen in 2020 at 1:37.52.
“Today was another blowout day for Elizabeth in the 600,” Assistant Coach Nathan Harder said. “Sticking to her race plan, she outgunned her entire heat, coming up from last place to win the heat, and the meet. The amount of success she has had across a wide range of events is unbelievable. Three records in one season is tough, especially against the times she’s lowering. As we’re looking to wrap up indoor in the next few weeks, Elizabeth keeps reminding us just how talented she is.”
Birgen Nelson ran the 200-meter in 25.54, finishing sixth and just .04 off the school record. Megan Geraets also ran the 200 and took eighth place in 25.66. Annika Poe took seventh in the shot put with a mark of 44-9.5, setting a PR.
“For our guys, it was another incremental improvement day against a really wide range of performances across every NCAA Division, NAIA, and NJCAA,” Harder said.
Wyatt Quiring crossed the 400-meter line in 49.67 for seventh place. Blake Fuller took 12th in the 800-meter at 1:58.43. Tucker Wallin ran the mile in 4:19.59 for 21st place. Jack Degonda was behind him in 32nd with a time of 4:24.56. And Carson Kiehne finished the 200-meter in 22.52 for 21st place.
Gustavus next competes at MSU-Mankato on Friday.
