“In our first big encounter with other MIAC schools, our high jumpers and hurdlers did more than hold their own, with a strong showing from each individual,” Assistant Coach Nathan Harder said. “Two event champions led the charge, Birgen Nelson in the hurdles, and Danny Bies in the high jump. As with every season, there’s still plenty of room to improve. In all of our events, from relays to throws; don’t miss a step from your Gusties in 2022. They’re already showing a lot of promise as a young group of talented and dedicated student-athletes that are coming to win.”
The Gustie men’s six event winners were highlighted by Tyler Smith crossing the 800-meter line in 1:59.76, Jack Degonda winning the 1000-meter in 2:38.16, and Garet Grant claiming the top spot on the 3,000-meter in 8:57.02. The 4×200 relay team of Isaiah Subah, Seth Zeitchick, Nathan Le, and Wyatt Quiring won in 1:31.54. In the field events, Danny Bies won the high jump with a clearance of 6-0.75 and Subah took first in the triple jump with a leap of 40-9.75.
“We had a really strong showing from the distance crew today,” Assistant Coach Brenden Huber said. “Definitely took some steps forward with a lot of PR’s and sweeping the 3k top spots. Loved our execution of race plans which lead to a one-two-three finish on the women’s side and five of the top six on the men’s side. This group continues to grow week after week.”
Gustavus next competes at St. Olaf on Friday.
