Fine Arts Preview: Family Weekend

Gustavus Fine Arts welcomes families to the hill for Family Weekend 2021! Families will have the chance to hear most of Gustavus Adolphus College’s large music ensembles in three concerts throughout Sunday. Plus, don’t miss the art exhibits currently showing in the Hillstrom Museum of Art or the Schaefer Art Gallery.

Family Weekend Showcase: Strings & Winds Concert
11 a.m.
Sunday, October 10
Christ Chapel

The first concert of the day will feature the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, the Gustavus Wind Symphony, and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Karin Dye, will perform the prelude from Lady Radnor’s Suite by Hastings Parry, while the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra,  conducted by Dr. Ruth Lin, will perform the Overture from Nabucco by Verdi and the Intermezzo from Cavall by Mascagni. The Gustavus Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Heidi Johanna Miller, will perform pieces including “The Hymn for the Lost and the Living in Memoriam September 11, 2001” by Eric Ewazen. Finally, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. James Patrick Miller, will perform two pieces from the Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud, among other works.

Family Weekend Showcase: Jazz Ensembles

Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall

In the second showcase concert of the day, the college’s two Jazz ensembles will perform: Adolphus Jazz and Gustavus Jazz Ensemble. Adolphus Jazz, directed by Dr. Masa Ishikawa, will perform “Cute” and “Li’l Darlin’” by Neal Hefti. Under the direction of Dr. Dave Stamps, Gustavus Jazz will perform a repertoire ranging from “Movin’ Uptown” by Benny Carter to “Samba Kinda Mambo” by Michael Phillip Mossman.

Family Weekend Showcase: Choral Ensembles
3 p.m.

Christ Chapel

The final concert of the day will feature all three Gustavus choral ensembles. The Gustavus Choir, under the direction of Dr. Brandon Dean, will perform pieces ranging from Mendelssohn’s “Richte mich, Gott” to “I Will Sing” by Michael Engelhardt. The Choir of Christ Chapel, conducted by Dr. Elisabeth Cherland, will perform “Life Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates” by William Mathias and “#UnitedWeDream” by Melissa Dunphy. The Lucia Singers, also conducted by Cherland, will perform a variety of pieces including, “Wau Bulan,” a Malaysian folk song, and “How Can I Keep from Singing” by Rev. Robert Lowry.

Art for All: the Swedish Experience in Mid-America

Hillstrom Museum

The Hillstrom Museum of Art presents Art for All: The Swedish Experience in Mid-America, on view September 13 through November 7, 2021.  The exhibit, which was co-organized by the Museum with the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas, features 60 paintings, drawings, and prints by 20 prominent Swedish American artists working in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Schaefer Art Gallery presents Putting Data Into Context, an exhibition in creative conjunction with Nobel Conference 57, Big Data Revolution. Arlene Birt, a twin Cities based artist and lead for the group Background Stories, is showing installation and participant based artworks which use data as a means of visual creativity.
