Men’s Indoor Track and Field Sets Records in Season Opener

The Gustavus men’s indoor track and field team was back in action at Bethel on Saturday to take an 80-74 win over Bethel.

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s indoor track and field team was back in action at Bethel on Saturday to take an 80-74 win over Bethel.  The first event of the day was the men’s mile when Tucker Wallin (So., Red Wing) finished with a time of 4:35.20 to place first, followed by Jack Degonda (Jr., Stillwater) with a time of 4:36.26 to place second.

Continuing the momentum, Taylor Rooney (Sr., Andover) shattered school records in the 60m hurdles with a 7.87 time and in high jump with a 2.06 clearance. The marks put him as the 5th fastest performance in division history and he currently leads the nation in Division III. Rooney also finished first in the 200m race. 

Looking to carry success in the field events, Steven Orzolek (Jr., Darwin) competed in the shot put with a 15.92m finish to place first in the event. 

Isaiah Subah (Fy., Bloomington) placed first in the 60m dash with a time of 7.45. Trigg Capistrant-Kinney (So., Minnestrista) also placed second in the 800m. 

Halfway through the day, Andrew Stumbo (Sr., Faribault) secured a first place finish in the 3000m with a time of 8.50.91. Concluding the day’s success, Degonda, Wallin, Nick Olfert (Jr., Shakopee), and Zane Michael (Jr., Ashland, Ohio) won the distance medley with a 11:02.00 time.

“It was so great to be back on the track and see everyone competing again. It was a great feeling and you could definitely tell how happy they were to be back in this type of competitive environment,” said Head Coach Aaron Lund.

“We have a strong team this year lead by incredible upperclassmen and surrounded by a group of talented, driven sophomores and freshmen. Today not only showed our leading talent, but also our depth. It takes a few meets every year to get back into competition shape, mindset, and race strategy. With that in mind, I think we had a great first meet of the season highlighted by many personal bests. I am really excited for this team to continue to build off of this moment in the next competitions.”
