SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team Saturday lost 78-55 at Macalester, dropping its third straight to 9-13 overall and 9-8 in the MIAC, while the Scots improve to 14-7 overall and 10-6 in the league.
Gustavus scored the first basket of the game but that proved to be its last lead of the game as the Scots answered with 13 consecutive points and never looked back. The Gusties, who trailed 35-17 at halftime, were limited to 25.9 percent shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes while Macalester shot 37.5 percent.
Macalester continued to add to its lead in the second half, going up by as much as 24 points at the 11:55 mark, and cruised to the decisive victory.
Gustavus finished the game shooting 37.9 percent compared to 44.4 percent from the Scots. Rebounds were even at 37 each. Macalester chucked up 33 three-pointers and made 15 while the Gusties went 5-for-19 from long range.
Evan Wieker (Jr., St. Michael) paced the offense with 13 points. Spencer Swanson (So., Waconia) added 11 points and six boards.
Gustavus hosts Concordia at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday as part of a men’s-women’s weeknight doubleheader against the Cobbers. The women follow at 7:45.
