SAINT PETER, Minn. – Trailing 3-0 after being swept in doubles play, the Gustavus women’s tennis team won five of six singles matches to claim an improbable 5-4 victory over previously undefeated Carleton on Saturday at the Swanson Tennis Center. The Gusties improve to 15-6 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC, while the Knights drop to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the league.
“It was truly an amazing effort from everyone today, on and off the court,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said. “They were all in, all day, and nobody got down after doubles. They said they were going to get their singles points and five of the six did in one of the most inspiring matches I’ve been a part of.”
Carleton looked every bit of an undefeated team by winning all three doubles matches for a comfortable 3-0 lead heading to singles. Simona Potockova (Sr., Nova’ Dubnica, Slovakia) started singles play with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1. Rachel Lindrud (Sr., North Oaks) followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6, and Sydney Douglas (Sr., North Mankato) tied the match with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 win at No. 4. Yuki Oda (Jr., Kawasaki, Japan) then gave the Gusties a 4-3 advantage with a comeback 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 win at No. 3.
The Knights tied the match at 4-4 with a three-set win at No. 2, making court five the center of attention. Alli Laux (So., Onalaska, Wis.) fended off five set points and secured the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 14-12 victory.
