Men’s Hockey Comes Up Short Against Saint Mary’s

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team hosted Saint Mary’s on Tuesday night in a postponed non-conference game, and despite a momentum surge in the second and third periods the Gusties were defeated 4-1. With the loss, the team moves to 5-13-2 overall and remains 0-7-1 in the conference.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team hosted Saint Mary’s on Tuesday night in a postponed non-conference game, and despite a momentum surge in the second and third periods the Gusties were defeated 4-1. With the loss, the team moves to 5-13-2 overall and remains 0-7-1 in the conference.

Both teams entered the game with high speed and intensity, Gustavus remained strong on the penalty kill but the Cardinals found the back of the net at 15:25 and tacked on a second goal 34 seconds later.

Saint Mary’s had the upper-hand on shots 13-6 before closing out the first frame.

Gustavus came into the second period with a surge of energy, but the Cardinals scored on a power play at the 8:06 mark. The Gusties had an extra skater advantage with 30 seconds left and Mason Etter (Sr., Grafton Wis.) connected on a pass to  Tyler Ebner (Sr., La Crosse, Wis.) to cut into the deficit 4-1.

The Black and Gold came out with their strongest offensive efforts of the game in the third period to rattle the Cardinals, outshooting them 10-4 but would have to settle for the 4-1 loss.

. Grant Boldt (Fy., Frazee) made 23 saves in the process.

The Gusties will next host Hamline on Friday and travel to St. Paul on Saturday close out the series.
