NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team traveled to St. Olaf on Tuesday night to complete its non-conference postponed series sweep over the Oles. The Gusties took a 4-2 win and move to 5-10-2 overall and remain 0-5-1 in the MIAC.

“I am really proud of our team for bouncing back with a great effort after a tough last weekend,” said Head Coach Brett Petersen. “They showed a lot of character tonight as we played our 6th game in 12 days.”

Gustavus entered with more confidence following a weekend series of setbacks and held more possession, outshooting St. Olaf for the opening six minutes 8-0. The Oles started to pick up the pace at the halfway mark as both teams were scoreless after the first period.

Four minutes into the second period, the Oles made a backhand shot on the puck on rebound, taking a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Dylan Gast (Sr., Dellwood took a big shot at the hash marks, launching the puck into the upper right corner of the net for an equalizer goal.

At the 15:03 mark Gustavus continued to get gritty as Gast and Tyler Ebner (Sr., La Crosse, Wis.) connected on a highlight reel level pass in front of the net to Toby Sengvongxay (Sr., Luverne) for a tap in goal to take the 2-1 lead.

Grant Boldt (Fy., Frazee) continued to keep the Gusties rolling, eliminating multiple point blank opportunities for the Oles.

Six minutes into the third, St. Olaf scored on a power play to reset the game. Five minutes later Lucas Jorgenson (Fy., Orono)  and Patrick McDonald (So., Camillus, N.Y.) made a drop pass along the boards to Joey Gimberlin (Fy., Mendota Heights) before making an impressive shifty move to his backhand into the slot, scoring blocker side for the 3-2 game winning Gustie goal.

With eight seconds left, Nick Klishko (Sr., San Diego) scored on an empty net for the 4-2 final.

Boldt was credited with the win making 35 saves while allowing two goals.

The Gusties are back in action when they host St. Mary’s on Friday night at 7:00.
