MOORHEAD, Minn. – No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey completed the series sweep over Concordia on Saturday with a 5-1 victory. The Gusties improve to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers drop to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the league.
“We did a lot of good things today, but there were a lot of penalties and not a lot of flow to the game,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “Scoring the first goal was a nice spring board and we found a way to win after grinding it out.”
Gustavus got on the board first as Brooke Power (So., Lakeville) scored a power play goal 5:23 into the first, assisted by Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove). The Cobbers evened the score one minute into the second frame but the Gusties answered at the 9:41 mark as Kaitlyn Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) scored with the help of Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan) and Jordyn Peterson (Sr., Brookings, S.D.). Power tallied her second power play goal of the game at the 14:06 mark, assisted by Molly McHugh (Jr., Minnetonka) and Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.).
“Brooke is coming along well and being a sophomore this year is certainly not easy because their first year was cut short,” Carroll said. “She has a lot of skill and is jiving with her line mates. She also has a knack for being a playmaker and has improved a lot on defense.”
Press scored the third Gustie goal of the second period with 1:19 left in the frame. McHugh was credited with the assist.
Kaitlyn Holland wrapped up the scoring at the 13:56 mark of the third with the help of Hannah Gray (Fy., Stillwater) and Emily Olson (Jr., Delano).
Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) earned the win in goal after making 11 saves. The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 49-12 and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Concordia went 0-for-2 on the skater advantage.
Gustavus next hosts Bethel at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game.
