WHITEWATER, Wis. – On Saturday afternoon Sophia Redding (Sr., Saint Paul) etched her name in the Gustie Gymnastics record book breaking the program record on bars in the dual meet against UW-Whitewater with a 9.7. The record was previously held by Sam Ardy ’19 in the 2017-18 season (9.675). The Gusties took a 187.575-182.400 loss to the Warhawks.
Redding led the way on bars while Annie Corbett (Jr., Brookfield, Wis.) tacked on a fourth place finish in the event scoring 9.350. Additionally, Corbett came in second in all-around (36.8).
Keeping the Gustie momentum going, newcomer Marley Michaud (Fy., Sartell) took a fourth place finish on vault (9.450), and Kendra Smaby (So., Palo Alto, Calif.) placed fifth on beam (9.375).
“We had many uncharacteristic mistakes on floor and some of that carried over to beam where nerves just got the best of us. It was only our second meet of the year after a strong first meet and our first traditional dual meet format since Feb of 2020. It takes some getting used to and we saw the impact of that a little this afternoon. Our seniors carried us this meet with Sophie breaking the record and Brooke having an overall great meet. They are setting the mark for the team to rise to.”
Gustavus wrapped up the night a pair of top five finishes on floor with Brooke Merila (Sr., St. Michael) scoring a 9.525 for third and Jenna Griffith (Jr., Brooklyn Center) posting a 9.5 in fourth.
“Overall we are happy with some things and have room for growth in other areas. Bettering our first meet score is a confidence boost and we know when we eliminate the errors we will make big waves.”
The Gusties are back in action when they travel to Hamline on Jan. 28th.
