SAINT PETER, Minn. – After a three week break, the Gustavus women’s hockey team started 2022 with a 3-0 win over Adrian on Thursday night. The No. 6-ranked Gusties outshot the No. 9-ranked Bulldogs 38-9 to improve to 8-2 overall.
“We’ve been practicing really well since we came back from break and we ended the semester not on the greatest note with a couple losses, but they came back ready to rock,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “The first 10 minutes of the game you could tell we hadn’t played in a while and we seemed a little nervous, but we survived the first and we settled down and started clicking. We did some really good things as the game wore on. Everyone in uniform contributed so that was good to see.”
The first period went scoreless with the Gusties holding a 10-3 advantage in shots. Nearly three minutes into the second, Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) found Madigan Goldsworthy (Sr., Chaska) for her second goal of the season for what proved to be the game-winner. The Gusties went into the second intermission with a one-goal advantage.
Emily Olson (Jr., Delano) gave the Gusties a 2-0 lead 5:59 into the third with the help of Sophia Coltvet (So., Arden Hills) and Brooke Power (So., Lakeville). And with an empty net in the final minute, Olson scored her second goal of the game, assisted by Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.), for a 3-0 final.
The Gusties outshot the Bulldogs 38-9 and and won the faceoff battle 39-14. Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) earned the win after making three saves in 31:46. Maria Widen (Fy., Burnsville) finished the game in goal, making six saves.
Gustavus next hosts Bethel at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game.
