Women’s Hockey Wins Season Opener 4-1 at Lake Forest

The Gustavus women’s hockey team opened its season Friday night with a 4-1 non-conference win at Lake Forest. The Gusties erased a 1-0 deficit after the first period with a pair of goals in both the second and third frames.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team opened its season Friday night with a 4-1 non-conference win at Lake Forest. The Gusties erased a 1-0 deficit after the first period with a pair of goals in both the second and third frames.

The Foresters took the first lead 12:36 into the game with a power play goal and carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Despite outshooting the Foresters 14-4 in the first 20 minutes, the Gusties were scoreless.

The offensive pressure paid off 1:58 into the second period as Jordyn Peterson (Sr., Brookings, S.D.) scored an unassisted power play goal. The Gusties scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 10:46 mark as Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.) found Kristina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) for an even-strength goal. The Gusties took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission with a 26-7 shot advantage.

Brooke Power (So., Lakeville) scored the third Gustie goal 1:38 into the third with the help of Holland and Molly McHugh (Jr., Minnetonka) on a power play. Gustavus scored its third power play goal of the game at the 3:16 mark as Press tallied her second goal of the game from Holland’s third assist.

The Gusties outshot the Foresters 37-9 as Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) made eight saves in net to earn the win. Gustavus went 3-for-5 on the skater-advantage.

Game two of the series begins at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lake Forest.
