NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team traveled to Northfield on Saturday and took a 1-0 victory over St. Olaf. With the win, the Gusties improve to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC. Lillian Selberg (Fy., Minneapolis) scored her first collegiate goal in what proved to be the game-winner.
Both teams pulled out defensive stops but St. Olaf had the upper hand on the attack outshooting the Gusties 7-4. Page Cocchiarella (Sr., Owatonna), Rachel Rehnelt (Sr., Albert Lea), and Selberg each had shots on net but both teams were held scoreless at halftime.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, the Gusties got a corner kick and Selberg shot on a rebound from inside the box, and scored in the top left corner of the net. Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) laid it out on the line in a show-stopping diving save at the sixteen minute mark and was credited with the win after making eight saves.
The Gusties are next in action when they host UW-Eau Claire for a non-conference match with a 3:30 kick-off on Sunday.
