SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team Wednesday took the top team in the conference to overtime, but suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Saint Mary’s at the Gustie Soccer Field. The Gusties drop to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 8-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the league.
Both teams posted seven shots on goal but it wasn’t until the 93rd minute that one found the back of the net and it came on a Cardinal shot from the left side to the back post and in for the golden goal.
Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) made six saves in a complete game effort.
”The sport of soccer is called the beautiful game for a reason, it is also harsh at times and today we saw the harsh side of it,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. “Credit for St. Mary’s for putting themselves in a position to win the game, but we feel it was a tough result for how well we played.
“Despite the result, we were proud of our performance today. We battled hard, played tough and really laid it all out on the field. We problem solved and adapted well and then implemented what we have been working on in training. We know we are close and will continue to stay motivated to improve every day.
“Anyone who has seen us play, knows we are a talented team. This is a fun group to watch — we just need to keep putting together the pieces of the puzzle.”
The Gusties continue MIAC play at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Kate’s.
