SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus volleyball team defeated the Macalester Scots in straight sets on Tuesday night. With the win, the Gusties begin with a 1-0 mark in the conference and improve to 12-2 overall.
“It was a nice way to open up conference play,” said Head Coach Rachelle Sherden. “I thought our team did a good job of controlling the momentum with mixing up our offense, aggressive serving and blocking. It was really fun to have Gustie Alum, Connie Fortin back in the gym and coaching up our team.”
Gustavus got on the board with a 5-2 lead and carried it to a 10-4 edge. The Scots responded with a four point run, but Gustavus had the upper hand setting the tone with a 25-12 first set.
The Gusties controlled the majority of the second set pacing with a five point lead and a blowout nine point run to secure the second frame.
Macalester put up the biggest challenge of the night in the final set, keeping the Gusties at a two point advantage in the beginning of play before Gustavus went on a convincing six point run to shut the door on the conference opener in straight sets.
Sarah Elliott (Jr.,Lombard, Ill.) led the team with eight kills, while Hailey Embacher (Sr., Mankato) had 13 digs. Additionally, Kasie Tweet (So., Adrian) tacked on 17 assists in the match.
