Nelson, Rooney Qualify for Finals in 100-, 110-Hurdles at NCAA Championships

Gustavus sprint hurdlers Birgen Nelson (So., Edina) and Taylor Rooney (Sr., Andover) both qualified for the finals in the 100- and 110-hurdles by winning their preliminary races on Friday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gustavus sprint hurdlers Birgen Nelson (So., Edina) and Taylor Rooney (Sr., Andover) both qualified for the finals in the 100- and 110-hurdles by winning their preliminary races on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Nelson won the first heat of the 100-hurdles with a school record time of 14.02. She ran the third fastest time between the three heats and will compete in the finals at 11:50 a.m. CST Saturday.

Rooney won the second heat of the 110-hurdles with a time of 14.08. He ran the second fastest time between the three heats and will compete in the finals at noon CST Saturday.

“I’m really happy with how Birgen and Taylor competed today,” Head Coach Aaron Lund said. “Birgen broke her own school record and they both did their best when it means the most. The Gusties are in a great spot to do really well tomorrow.”

The top eight finishers in each final event earn All-America status.
