SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s track & field team welcomed five other teams to campus Saturday for the Drake Alternative. Between the Drake Alt. and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Gusties won seven events during the day.
Jack Degonda (Jr., Stillwater) and Henry Hinchcliffe (So., Austin) went one-two in the 1500-meter in a field of 31 runners, clocking in at 4:08.72 and 4:09.90. Jeremy Gilbertson (Sr., Maple Plain) also won a distance race with a time of 15:52.23 in the 5000-meter. The Gusties had strong showings in both the 400- and 800-meter races, placing second through fourth in the 400, led by Wyatt Quiring (Jr., Fairmont) in second at 49.26; and taking second through sixth in the 800, led by Noah Johnson (Jr., Stillwater) in second at 2:00.12.
In the field, Evan Wieker (Fy., St. Michael) won the high jump with a clearance of 5-8.75. Xander DuMoulin (Jr., Shorewood) leaped 22-1.75 in the long jump to win the event. DuMoulin also won the triple jump with a meet-record distance of 46-7.25. And Joshua Beiswanger (So., Mankato) had a winning throw of 164-10 in the hammer throw.
Taylor Rooney (Sr., Andover) competed in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and won the 110-hurdles with a time of 13.98.
Five Gusties competed in the 10,000-meter at the Hamline Showcase in St. Paul on Saturday night and Garet Grant (Jr., Winona) led the bunch with a second place finish at 31:36.15.
“This week, our men’s team really showed up and competed with intensity,” Head Coach Aaron Lund said. “Taylor got the day started becoming a Drake Relays champion in the 110-hurdles. Jack and Henry performed great in the 1500m, Xander set a new meet record in triple jump with a best of 14.20 meters, Josh threw over 50 meters in the hammer throw on his final throw of the competition to win the event, and Wyatt, Dylan, and Seth all ran 49 seconds in the 400 meters today to set new personal bests and move up near the top of the conference.”
Gustavus next competes May 1 at Minnesota State-Mankato.
