Gusties Rise to the Occasion, Claim Conference Title

The Gustavus women’s soccer team put the finishing touches on a fine season by playing consistent soccer and winning the upset-filled MIAC women’s soccer championship. The Gusties received a bye in the first round of the tournament as a result of their first place tie with Carleton during the regular season. They then faced Concordia, who had upset St. Mary’s (SMC was the only conference team to beat Gustavus this season). Kim J. Olson (So., Burnsville) provided the Gusties with all of the scoring they needed as she beat the goalkeeper from about 15 yards away to give Gustavus a 1-0 victory. Heather Tideman (Sr., Wahkon/St. Cloud Apollo) recorded the shutout and made five saves as the Gustie defense allowed only six shots throughout the contest.
In the final Gustavus faced St. Olaf who had upset Carleton in a shootout. Playing two 90-minute soccer games back-to-back is not exactly the ideal way to spend a blustery November afternoon however, the Gusties were up to the challenge and all the hard work during the season paid off. Kim J. Olson picked up where she left off against Concordia by scoring the first goal against St. Olaf as Gustavus held a 1-0 lead at the half. St. Olaf came right back and tied the score at 1-1 just after the intermission. However, the Gusties were not to be denied and Lisa Schubert (Fy., Bloomington/Jefferson), the team’s top scorer, came through in the clutch by picking up two quick goals to break the game open and provide the winning margin. Heather Tideman picked up the victory in the nets as she recorded 10 saves.
Four members of the soccer team finished their college careers on a high note with the team winning the title. This group saw a big change in the program through their four years as the team grew from a club team in 1980 to the conference champions in 1984. The group includes Heather Tideman, Barb Cattrysse (Mankato/West), Kim B. Olson (Storm Lake, IA) and Stacy Mangnuson (White Bear Lake/Mariner).

Most assists in a game (individual): 2 – Missy Hammond, Barb Jaeger
Most goals in a game (team): 6 – versus St. Olaf, twice
