We have received some helpful clarification on the U.S. Census that is currently underway, and wanted to share details with you. Your Gustie is also receiving this information via email today.
Gustavus students who were assigned on-campus housing during the spring semester will be counted in the 2020 U.S. Census as part of the Group Quarters Operation. This means Gusties who live in on-campus housing will be counted BY Gustavus and should not be counted at home.
Per a release from the Census Bureau, “students in colleges and universities temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 virus will still be counted as part of the [Group Quarters] process. Even if they are home on census day, April 1, they should be counted according to the residence criteria which states they should be counted where they live and sleep most of the time.” In the case of those who live on campus at Gustavus, that means Gustavus will submit their information via our process for reporting to the U.S. Census. Students who live off-campus for the school year should respond accordingly with appropriate address and information.
Again, “Per the Census Bureau’s residence criteria, in most cases students living away from home at school should be counted at school, even if they are temporarily elsewhere due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
