Tyler Teichmiller ’24

“The professors want to get to know how you learn best as a student, and want to see you be successful both in and out of the classroom.”

Having a double major in Statistics and Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, Tyler’s education at Gustavus has revolved around the Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Department.

Throughout this time in the department, Tyler has greatly appreciated the community that he has found with other students and having familiar faces in all of his classes. He says, “I have also enjoyed the collaborative nature of many of the classes, which takes away the pressure of impressing your classmates and professors.”

Tyler has specifically enjoyed inquiry-based learning courses, in which there is less pressure towards being right, and more of a focus on learning through trial and error. He says, “The classes are about learning how to collaborate and be resilient, while also teaching you tons of mathematical concepts.”

Tyler has participated in opportunities to do research through the Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Department with Health Services, in which he was able to work with a faculty member and another student to gain insight into possible improvements for this campus resource. Within the department, Tyler has also appreciated the support of professors, both during class as well as with insight into future career opportunities. His advisor, who also happens to be his favorite professor on campus, has been very helpful to him in answering questions about grad school and career options. As a whole, Tyler feels that the Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Department has adequately prepared him for a future career, especially in the aspect of time management skills, as well as analytical and problem solving skills.

Outside of the classroom, Tyler is also involved on campus with the swim team, Gustie Greeters, as a peer MALT, and with a variety of other student organizations.
