“Within Geography courses, we learn practical skills in jobs Geographers have, such as urban planning and GIS.”
As a double major, Benji has found a sense of community within both the Geography and Religion departments. Benji has been able to combine these majors to start to develop a well-rounded understanding of how the world works, both in terms of religion as well as socially and politically.
In both the Geography and Religion departments, Benji feels that the faculty are very supportive of students and committed to their success. Within the Geography Department specifically, Benji especially appreciates Professors Tiffany Grobelski and Joaquin Villanueva, saying, “They encourage my creativity and support me in my interests.”
Within both departments, Benji has appreciated the opportunities for further academic development outside of the classroom. Within the Geography Department, students are able to do experiential learning through J-Term trips, helping professors with research projects, and co-authorship of papers. Additionally, Benji says, “Geography students present at MUGS (Midwest Undergraduate Geography Symposium) every year, and it is a great opportunity for presenting on a topic in the study of Geography as well as seeing what other Geography students are researching.”
Overall within both the Religion and Geography departments, Benji has greatly appreciated the openness and support from faculty, describing his Geography professors as supportive mentors.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Benji is also involved in United Christian Ministries, Environmental Action Coalition, Whittling Club, Men’s Rugby, and Ultimate Frisbee.
