“Several faculty members have given me advice about what career fields I might be interested in – and helped me understand the paths to having those careers.”
Jake became interested in Economics during his freshman year when he took his first economics class. After exploring the field, he decided to become an Economic Analysis major due to the variety of interesting subjects that this concentration covers.
During his time within the Business and Economics Department, he has found a very friendly community that is very supportive and quick to help peers understand ideas. He has appreciated the faculty within the department, particularly Professor Shu-Ling Wang, saying, “Shu-Ling has incredible expertise in macroeconomic theory and modeling and is great at explaining very complicated ideas about how economies function in ways that are digestible to students like me.”
As a whole, Jake feels that the faculty within the department have been helpful in preparing him for a variety of future careers that he is considering, as he is interested in multiple areas including a future law career or environmental economics. Through the department, Jake has also found opportunities to connect with people within the economics field outside of campus. The department itself, as well as the Gustavus Finance Club, has fostered opportunities for economics students to meet famous economists or take trips to tour financial companies in the Twin Cities.
At Gustavus, Jake has been able to explore other areas of interest outside of Economics, including biology and philosophy. On campus, he is an economics tutor, part of the Finance Club, and works as a research assistant within the Biology Department.
