Abby Vizenor ’25

“My Public Discourse course helped me to connect with my community and work to make change!”

Abby chose a Communication Studies major simply because she enjoyed her initial Communications classes and appreciated the faculty within the department. Additionally, she says, “I have a strong interest in social media and photography so I figured this would be the right track.”

Abby describes the support from faculty within the department as something that she has appreciated about her Communication Studies courses. She says, “The department is very flexible, welcoming, and wants you to succeed and enjoy the classes.”

She has enjoyed the community aspect of her courses, saying of her Communication Studies courses so far, “Not only did I learn a lot, but I made friends and the professors created a classroom environment that focused on trial and error as opposed to perfection.” She identifies Sarah Wolter as her favorite professor, describing Wolter’s class, Screens, as one of her favorites “because we got to analyze advertisements and also do a lot of interactive in-class activities.” Abby appreciates professor Wolter’s enthusiasm about class content as well as her students’ lives, saying, “She makes you feel supported and cared for, along with teaching the best courses!”

She points to the faculty within the department as helping her prepare for success in a future career, saying, “The faculty have high expectations for your work, but they help you to achieve those expectations with consistent and detailed feedback.”

In addition to her academic pursuits, Abby is also a member of both the cross country and track and field teams, as well as being involved in Student Athlete Advisory Council.
