SAINT PETER, Minn. – Gustavus senior hurdler Birgen Nelson (Edina) has been accepted to race the 60-hurdles at the 2023 USA Track & Field (USATF) Indoor Championships, held Feb. 16-18 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Nelson becomes the second Gustie to compete at the USATF Indoor Championships, joining Taylor Rooney ’21, who ran the men’s 60-hurdles in 2020. Rooney, who is currently a graduate student-athlete at Texas Tech, will also run the 60-hurdles at this year’s USATF event.
Nelson, who enters the indoor championships with a NCAA DIII record time of 8.38, will race against some of the nation’s top hurdlers, including two-time World Indoor Championship gold medalist Lolo Jones, two-time USATF champion Sharika Nelvis, and 2022 USATF runner up Alaysha Johnson.
The semifinals of the women’s 60-hurdles is scheduled for 2:12 p.m. CST Saturday and finals are 4:22 p.m.
The races will be live streamed on USATF TV. NBC will also broadcast the finals on Saturday.
