Men’s Hockey Earns First MIAC Win, 4-3 at Augsburg

The Gustavus men’s hockey team won its first conference game of the season, 4-3, Saturday night at Augsburg.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team won its first conference game of the season, 4-3, Saturday night at Augsburg. The Gusties improve to 3-14-2 overall and 1-8-1 in the MIAC, while the Auggies drop to 9-7-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the league.

The Gusties took the initial lead as Patrick Wyers (Fy., Eden Prairie) scored his first career goal at the the 2:41 mark of the first, assisted by Jack Kubitz (Jr., Wayzata). Gustavus increased its lead to three in the second period. Kyle Heffron (So. Rosemount) netted his second goal of the year at the 5:54 mark with the help of Micah Gernander (So., Coleraine) and Stanislav Danaev (Jr., Moscow, Russia). Three minutes later, Kubitz scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Nate Stone (Fy., Edina) and Jac Triemert (So., Woodbury).

The Auggies ended the shutout with five minutes remaining in the frame and the score remained 3-1 Gustavus at the second intermission. Augsburg rolled its momentum into the third with a pair of goals to tie the game with 12:14 left in regulation. Four minutes later, Danaev put the Gusties back in front, 4-3, assisted by Mason Hendrickson (Fy., Deephaven). Gustavus clamped down defensively in the final minutes to earn the road win.

Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 23 saves while the Auggies outshot the Gusties 26-15.

The victory marks the first conference win since the 2019-20 season, ending a 22-game winless streak in the MIAC.

Gustavus faces off against Hamline in two weekends for another MIAC series.
