Men’s Hockey Falls to UW-Superior 6-3

The Gustavus men’s hockey team Friday lost 6-3 to UW-Superior at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team Friday lost 6-3 to UW-Superior at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties fall to 2-12-2 overall while the Yellowjackets improve to 10-5-1.

UW-Superior struck first at the 13:52 mark of the opening frame and held the one-goal advantage through the first intermission. The Yellowjackets went up two goals less than two minutes into the second before the Gusties ended the shutout at the 4:30 mark on a power play goal by Toby Sengvongxay (Sr., Luverne), assisted by Dylan Gast (Sr., Dellwood) and Kylar Fenton (So., Grafton, Wis.). Less than 30 seconds later, Nate Stone (Fy., Edina) tied the game with the help of Kyle Heffron (So., Rosemount).

The Yellowjackets regained the lead for good with 4:15 left in the second and added two more goals before the end of the period for a 5-2 advantage after 40 minutes. Stanislav Danaev (Jr., Moscow, Russia) scored the final Gustie goal at the 8:14 mark of the third, assisted by Mason Hendrickson (Fy., Deephaven), before the visitors tacked on an empty netter in the final minute.

Superior outshot the Gusties 22-17 as Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 16 saves. The Yellowjackets went 0-for-2 on the power play while the Gusties went 1-for-4.

Gustavus hosts UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday for its final non-conference game of the season.
