Men’s Hockey Loses 4-1 at Saint John’s

The Gustavus men’s hockey team Friday night lost 4-1 against Saint John’s, dropping to 2-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the MIAC.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team Friday night lost 4-1 against Saint John’s, dropping to 2-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the MIAC. The Johnnies move to 7-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the league with game two of the conference series set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Saint Peter.

After a scoreless first period, Saint John’s took the first lead at the 6:39 mark of the second with a short handed goal. Four minutes later, the Johnnies scored again and held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Saint John’s extended the lead to three at the 12:25 mark of the third before Kylar Fenton (So., Grafton, Wis.) ended the shutout at the 15:41 mark with his second goal of the season, assisted by Patrick McDonald (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) and Jack Kubitz (Jr., Wayzata). With an empty net in the final seconds, the Johnnies scored their fourth goal to finish the game.

Saint John’s outshot the Gusties 42-18. Both teams went scoreless on the power play with SJU going 0-for-2 and GAC 0-for-1. Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 38 saves in the loss.
