Men’s Hockey Beats Host at Superior Showdown

The Gustavus men’s hockey team erased an early one-goal deficit for a 3-1 win against host UW-Superior in the second game of the Superior Showdown on Thursday night.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team erased an early one-goal deficit for a 3-1 win against host UW-Superior in the second game of the Superior Showdown on Thursday night. The Gusties improve to 2-8-1 overall while the Yellowjackets drop to 9-5-0, and will play Marian at 7:05 p.m. Friday in the final game of the four-team tournament.

UW-Superior tallied the first goal of the game at the 8:25 mark of the first on a power play and maintained the one-goal lead until the 13:33 mark of the second when Dylan Gast (Sr., Dellwood) scored unassisted for his second goal of the season. Five minutes later, Jac Triemert (So., Woodbury) posted his fifth goal of the season with the help of Jack Suchy (So., Medina) and Kylar Fenton (So., Grafton, Wis.), and the Gusties carried a 2-1 lead into the third period.

With 2:10 remaining in the game, Nate Stone (Fy., Edina) added an insurance goal, his third of the year, with assists from Gast and George Hansen (Sr., Patchogue, N.Y.), and the Gusties held on for the two-goal decision.

Superior outshot the Gusties 27-16 as Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 26 saves. Gustavus went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets converted 1-of-4 on the man advantage.
