SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team scored three goals in the third period Saturday night against Saint Mary’s at Don Roberts Ice Rink, but came up short in a 4-3 loss. The Gusties suffer the series sweep, dropping to 0-7-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 4-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the league.
Saint Mary’s wasted little time in scoring the game’s first goal 43 seconds into the first. The Cardinals added two more goals in the first at the 10:52 and 16:50 marks for a comfortable 3-0 advantage at the first intermission.
SMU then gained a 4-0 advantage 3:53 into the second with its second power play goal of the night and held a four-goal lead at the second break.
Gustavus ended the shutout at the 4:22 mark of the third as Jac Triemert (So., Woodbury) scored his first collegiate goal with the help of Nick Mohs-Messerli (So., Orono) and Nate Stone (Fy., Edina). The Gusties went on the power play shortly after and Kylar Fenton (So., Grafton, Wis.) connected for a power play goal at the 6:12 mark. Jack Kubitz (Jr., Wayzata) was credited with the assist. Four minutes later, Triemert scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Kubitz and Joey Gimberlin (So., Mendota Heights), creating an interesting end of regulation. But the Cardinals did not concede the equalizer and escaped with the series sweep.
For the second night in a row, the Gusties outshot the Cardinals in a losing effort, 24-22. Saint Mary’s went 2-for-5 on the power play while the Gusties were 1-for-3. Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 18 saves.
Gustavus turns to non-conference action next weekend with a Friday night home game against Lawrence followed by a Saturday night home game against Concordia-Wisconsin.
