WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team was dealt a 4-1 loss at Saint Mary’s on Friday night. The Gusties drop to 0-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 3-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the league.
The Cardinals took the first lead at the 8:15 mark of the opening frame and held the one-goal lead through the first intermission until taking a 2-0 advantage 6:36 into the second. The Gusties broke the shutout at the 15:10 mark of the second as Stanislav Danaev (Jr., Moscow, Russia) scored his first goal of the season with the help of Toby Sengvongxay (Sr., Luverne) and Wilmer Svensson (Fy., Stockholm, Sweden). The score remained 2-1 at the second break.
Saint Mary’s added two insurance goals in the third period and held on for the three-goal margin of victory. The Gusties outshot the Cardinals 31-26. Both teams went scoreless on the power play with the Gusties going 0-for-2 and the Cardinals 0-for-3.
Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 22 saves in goal for the Gusties.
Game two of the MIAC series begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in Saint Peter.
