The Library is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022-23 Patricia Lindell Research Paper Award. Congratulations to Birgen Nelson and Wyatt Quiring, whose paper, Minnesota Nice: The Impacts of Voter Reform in the United States Midwest, was awarded the top prize! The two co-authors will split the $400 award. The paper was written for POL 300: Empirical Political Analysis and used multiple regression models to investigate the impact of various voting reforms on voter turnout in the Midwest in 2016, 2018 and 2020. The judging panel, comprised of the library faculty, was particularly impressed by how their literature review reflected a sophisticated understanding of the research conversations in the field and indicated how the paper addressed gaps in the existing scholarship.
The paper was one of five strong finalists. We are pleased to recognize the other finalists, listed in alphabetical order:
- Mallory Denzer, An Understanding of Religion in Psychotherapy: A Revised Conception of Malinowski on Anxiety
- Emily Seppelt: Feminist Governance Structures and Grassroots Activism in the National Organization for Women
- Cairo Shetka, Developmental Imbalance in Adolescent Reward Circuits and Sleep
- Julia Simms, Development of a Humanoid: Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty

We would also like to thank all the faculty sponsors who took the time to nominate the submissions. The library will soon be accepting submissions for the next research paper award to be announced in the fall of 2024.
