MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s golf team is tied for fourth place at the MIAC Championships after Saturday’s first round. The Gusties shot a 330 (+38) at Bunker Hills Golf Club and are 28 strokes behind the leader Carleton.

Annika Reierson (Jr., Delano) and Kristin Martens (Sr., Sartell) are leading the Gusties, tied for 12th place with scores of seven-over 80. Laurel Ward (Sr., Bozeman, Mont.) is tied for 24th after shooting 83, Emily Kolb (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) is tied for 34th at 87, and Zada Olig (Sr., Wayzata) is tied for 39th at 90.

“Instead of waiting for the second day of competition the gals came out ready to play with relaxed and committed shots,” Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey said. “We looked very comfortable over the ball and made more committed shots early. Our energy and body language was solid throughout the round. Tomorrow should be a good day because we have no say in the course and understand where we need to hit the ball. The conference tournament is always exciting and I think the women are enjoying the competition.”

Round two of the MIAC Championships begins at 10:16 a.m. Sunday.
