ST. PAUL, Minn. — For their second time in as many years, the Gusties opened MIAC play against the Scots, and history repeated itself Wednesday night, as the Gustavus volleyball team defeated Macalester 3-0.
The Gusties made quick work of the Scots, posting their first MIAC victory of the season in their first conference competition, and rolling to their third straight 3-0 triumph.
The Scots would jump out to an early lead in the first set, but the Gusties evened the score at 8-8 and never looked back, building their lead to as many as nine, including the final, 25-16. Set two was more dominant play for the Gusties, who ran out to an early lead and never let go, rounding out the set two victory at 25-17. The third set was more of the same, as the Gusties finished the sweep with a score of 25-14.
Marlee Turn (Jr., Kennedy) led a balanced offensive attack, hammering out 13 kills and hitting an impressive .407, while Lauren Klaith (Jr., Rockford) and Sarah Elliott (Sr., Lombard, Ill.) added 10 and nine of their own, followed by Sydney Olson (Sr., Willmar) who chipped in eight. Kasie Tweet (Jr., Adrian) accounted for 23 of the Gusties’ 43 assists and posted 11 digs for her third double-double of the season, while Maren Sundberg (Fy., Eagan) delivered 17 digs.
The No. 14 Gusties (10-2 overall, 1-0 conference) take to the road this weekend, heading to Iowa to take part in the Wartburg Invitational. Gustavus will face Wartburg at noon on Saturday before squaring off against Coe at 2 p.m.
