Class of 2022 To Celebrate Commencement May 21

The Gustavus Class of 2022 weathered the pandemic and thrived through adversity on their collective path to graduation.

The 556 graduates of the Gustavus Adolphus College Class of 2022 will graduate on Saturday, May 21, with an on-campus, in-person commencement ceremony beginning at 1:45 p.m. on Hollingsworth Field.

Most of the graduates began their time at Gustavus in the fall of 2018, spending a full year on campus—living in Norelius or Pittman Hall with their new classmates, attending small, discussion-based classes in academic buildings across campus, and getting involved in one or more of the College’s 120+ student organizations—before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted courses in the spring of their sophomore year. After an uncertain junior year marked by a mix of in-person, hybrid, and online courses, they returned to campus full-time as seniors, finishing their last spring on the hill with a more typical residential liberal arts experience at Gustavus.

Among this talented class of students, researchers, artists, musicians, and athletes, this resilient group includes a nurse who plans to serve in the military, an environmental advocate from the island of Mauritius, a winner and three semifinalists for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award, a plaintiff in the Juliana v. United States constitutional climate change lawsuit who was a finalist for the prestigious Truman Scholarship, the baccalaureate speaker who plans to move to New Orleans to serve as a VA Medical Center nurse, those who fulfilled their dream of studying internationally despite the pandemic, a finalist for the Schwarzman Scholarship to study business in China, and the Student Senate co-president who will deliver the commencement address on Saturday.
