INDIANAPOLIS — The Gustavus men’s golf team has been selected to the 2022 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships after receiving an at-large bid on Monday. The Gusties, ranked No. 19 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll, are one of nine Pool C berths in a field of 43 teams.
Gustavus is making its first NCAA appearance since 2013 and 27th appearance overall, which is the seventh most in Division III history. The Gusties’ top five to compete at the NCAA tourney includes Jacob Pederson (Sr., Minnetonka), Max Ullan (Sr., Blaine), Wyatt Wasko (Jr., Lake Elmo), Sam Skaar (Sr., Coleraine), and Ben Forsberg (So., Shafer). Pedersen leads the group with a 72.2-stroke average after 20.5 rounds this season. Ullan owns a 73.4 average in 20.5 rounds, while Wasko is averaging 74.4 with 20.5 rounds as well. Skaar has played 14 rounds with a 76.1 average and Forsberg has 16.5 rounds with a 77.9 average.
The championships will be held May 10-13 at Mission Inn Resort and Club, in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. and hosted by Oglethorpe and Greater Orlando Sports Commission. The team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play or the conclusion of the last fully completed round. After 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.
A total of 221 participants will compete at the 2022 championship. Thirty-two conferences were awarded an automatic qualification for the championships. Two teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final nine berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. Six individuals were selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.
