Men's Tennis Earns 33rd Consecutive MIAC Championship, Shuts Out Hamline

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team locked up its 33rd consecutive MIAC regular season championship and the No. 1 seed for the postseason tournament, which begins next Friday. The Gusties are now 22-10 overall and finish the conference season 9-0.

“The guys competed well today,” said Head Coach Tommy Valentini “Depth was key for us in both matches as it has been all year. We had strong starts in doubles and did well to stay in the moment in the singles and we took advantage of the opportunities to compete and improve. We’re thankful for another conference title. This group has been outstanding in representing our tradition and our family all year long. It means a lot to them to have the opportunity to compete in the post season and to continue to be together and improve as a team. We look forward to a great week of preparation and to enjoying whatever challenges come our way on Friday.”

The Gusties also competed in a non-conference match at home, hosting the Bethany Lutheran and blanked the Vikings.

“It was a great effort from the boys at home today,” said Coach Chase Johnson. “They were very focused and intentional on the things they wanted to improve upon. Taona and Diego showed how much they’ve grown this year by running our doubles plays at a high level. Drew and Marco played steady all the way through and Luke and Sean did a great job of battling back from a slow start and kept their foot on the gas pedal.

“In singles, Joe was maniacally focused and provided a steady presence of positive energy. Justin played within himself perfectly and scrapped his way to a win in a classic Justin performance. Will and Odin provided plenty of entertainment by enjoying the opportunity to play and providing a great atmosphere for everyone else playing.”
