SAUK CENTRE, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team took third place out of 16 teams Saturday at the Saint John’s Winter Classic. The Gusties scored a seven-over 295, just one stroke back of UW-Eau Claire and two strokes behind Saint John’s. The Gusties had the lead going into the 18th hole, but scored a collective six-over par on the final hole.

Jacob Pedersen (Sr., Minnetonka) earned medalist honors for the third time this year with a three-under par 69. Pedersen’s round included four birdies and one bogie. Max Ullan (Sr., Blaine) tied for second with a 71. Ullan led the team with five birdies on the day. Wyatt Wasko (Jr., Lake Elmo) tied for 19th at 77 and Ben Forsberg (So., Shafer) tied for 29th at 79. Sam Skaar (Sr., Coleraine) led the second team, tying for 11th with a 74.

Today was a big opportunity for us to beat some very good teams in a one round tournament but we did not execute our shots through all 18 holes,” Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey said. “We were within reach of a win but a very poor finish on hole 18 kept us out of first place. I know the guys are very frustrated and will have a chance to take that frustration out for another one round tournament tomorrow. Hitting into the wind today added 40 to 50 yards to the shot and it was very impressive to see the scores of Jacob Pedersen and Max Ullen, both shooting under par. Also, Sam Skaar grinder out a good score. We’ll get another good test tomorrow with cold temperatures and high winds again.”

Gustavus concludes the regular season tomorrow at the Saint John’s Spring Invitational, hosted at the Monticello Country Club.
