SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s and men’s swim and diving teams topped Saint Benedict and Saint John’s in their final home meet of the season. The Gustie women won 195-99 while the men won by a margin of 201-86.
“It was a great day to honor our seniors the led us through an unpredictable time and taught their younger teammates the meaning of resiliency, moving forward, and getting to ‘what’s next,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “They reminded us to worry less about what we can’t do, and focus on what we still get to do.”
The Gustie women started the day sweeping in diving events with sophomore Emmalyn Dickerson as the top finisher in one meter (435.35) followed by senior Emily An with her second straight win in three meter (447.90).
The women stayed consistent in relay events, winning the 200 Medley relay with the team of Mikayla Witte, Leah Soukup, Ellen Hofstede, and Lucy Peterson touching the wall first clocking a time of 1:51.20.
Junior Annika Johns won in each of her individual events for the Gusties; the 200 Free (1:59.97), the 200 Backstroke (2:12.58), and the 500 Free (5:26.38)
Fresh off of a sweep at Stevens Points that earned her an Athlete of the Week nod, Ellen Hofstede continued to find success finishing first in the 50 Free (24.32), the 100 Free (53.35), and the 100 Fly (1:00.22).
The Gustavus women finished the day strong in the 200 Free Relay as Alison Gilles, Abby Yartz, Lucy Peterson, and Marit Isaacson (1:39.51).
Also beginning the day on diving for the men’s team, sophomore Andrew Jensen had first place finishes in one meter (461.85) and in three meter (466.60).
The Gustie men shined on relays with Dane Hudson, Kieran Ripken, Peyton Richardson, and Andrew Becker setting the bar high with a 1:34.89 time in the 200 Medley relay.
Junior Callen Zemek was the top finisher in the 1000 Free (9:46.63) and the 500 Free (4:48.54).
Sophomore duo Matt Strom and Tyler Teichmiller came away with wins, with Strom touching the wall at 1:44.87 in the 200 Free and Teichmiller adding another to the Gustie win column in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.09).
Coming off of MIAC Athlete of the Week honors, Dane Hudson won the 100 Backstroke with a 53.98.
Sophomore Payton Richardson swept in every event he competed in; 200 Fly (2:00.55), 100 Fly (52.11), and 200 IM (2:01.16).
Juniors Andrew Becker and Farrque Hussein led Gustavus in the final events with Becker placing first in the 50 Free (21.41) and Hussein capping off the day winning the 200 Breaststroke (2:15.17).
The Gusties will next travel to the University of Minnesota on February 4th-5th to compete in the MN Challenge before MIAC Championships.
“It was a great meet overall with lots of great races. Saint John’s is going to be a formidable foe when we get to the conference meet, I was very pleased overall with the improvements we made today and I think we’re set up pretty well to have a successful end to the season.”
