Women’s Hockey Blanks Bethel 5-0

No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey won its sixth consecutive game Tuesday night in a non-conference 5-0 victory over Bethel. The Gusties, who now have a NCAA Division III-leading 10 shutouts, improve to 13-2 overall, while the Royals drop to 5-6.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey won its sixth consecutive game Tuesday night in a non-conference 5-0 victory over Bethel. The Gusties, who now have a NCAA Division III-leading 10 shutouts, improve to 13-2 overall, while the Royals drop to 5-6.

Emily Olson (Jr., Delano) got the Gusties on the board at the 15:49 mark of the first period, assisted by Brooke Power (So., Lakeville). With just over a minute remaining in the frame, Gabby Slykas (Sr., Frankfort, Ill.) took a shot from the point which was redirected into the goal by Madigan Goldsworthy (Sr., Chaska). Power was credited with an assist along with Slykas and the Gusties led 2-0 at the first intermission.

Kaitlyn Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) took advantage of a breakaway 6:24 into the second and gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead, which stood through the second intermission. The Gusties added two insurance goals in the third as Power scored her MIAC-leading 12th goal of the season at the 3:25 mark, assisted by Olson. One minute later, Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) scored her 11th goal of the season with the help of Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.).

Maria Widen (Fy., Burnsville) recorded her first career shutout in a complete game effort. Widen made five saves as the Gusties outshot the Royals 37-5. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Gustavus next has a MIAC series with Saint Mary’s. Friday night’s game is in Winona and Saturday afternoon’s matchup is in Saint Peter.
