ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey Friday beat host Saint Benedict 2-0 in the first game of a home-home series. The Gusties have earned a shutout in their last five games while improving to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC.
Emily Olson (Jr., Delano) wasted little time in giving the Gusties a 1-0 lead, scoring her third goal of the season 2:02 into the game. Kaitlyn Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) assisted on the goal.
Nearly 12 minutes into the second period, Brooke Power (So., Lakeville) tallied a power play goal aided by Hailey Holland’s (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.) team-leading eighth assist this season along with Kayla Vrieze’s (Sr., Eagan) fifth helper. The Gusties went 1-for-6 on the skater advantage tonight and killed all three Bennie power plays.
Having started every game in goal this season, Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) moves her record to 6-0 with her fifth-straight clean sheet. McCoy made 16 saves tonight, increasing her season total to 73 against one goal allowed.
Game two of the MIAC series is 2 p.m. Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
