SUPERIOR, Wis. – Behind an impressive performance by its top line forwards, the Gustavus women’s hockey team won 6-0 at UW-Superior on Tuesday night. The Gusties improve to 5-0 overall while the Yellowjackets drop to 4-4.

Gustavus’s top line forwards of Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove), Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.), and Molly McHugh (Jr., Minnetonka) accounted for five of the six goals tonight.

“They work really well together and it’s great to see them get good results together,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “Not only are they good on the power play but also on the penalty kill. They are veteran players that know the system and its good to see them get rewarded.”

Press started the scoring 8:34 into the game with an assist going to Sophia Coltvet (So., Arden Hills). Press then scored her fifth goal of the season with just 15 seconds left in the first period on a power play. Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan) and Brooke Power (So., Lakeville) were credited with the assists.

Holland gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead 2:58 into the second period with the help of Press. At the 8:16 mark of the third period, McHugh joined her linemates with a goal, assisted by Holland and Press. Two minutes later, McHugh scored her second goal of the game and fourth of the season on a power play, assisted by Holland and Vrieze. And at the 11:39 mark, Kaitlyn Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) tallied her first career goal, unassisted.

Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) made 19 saves for her fourth consecutive shutout. The Gusties outshot the Yellowjackets 47-19 and went 2-for-7 on the power play. The Gusties killed all four Yellowjacket power plays.

“Our goalie played exceptional tonight,” Carroll said. “She had some tough saves and at key times for us. Superior forechecked us hard and we haven’t had a lot of time in the defensive zone this season. We’ve been working hard in d zone coverage in practice and it was good to see that in a game situation.”

Gustavus is off for Thanksgiving break and then returns to MIAC play Dec. 3-4 for a series against Saint Benedict.
