SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Macalester. The Gusties secured the No. 4 seed in the MIAC playoffs with their sixth consecutive conference win and will host No. 5 Augsburg at 2 p.m. Monday in the MIAC quarterfinals.

The first half went scoreless with just five shots combined between the two teams. The offensive pressure picked up for the Gusties in the second half and it paid off in the 64th minute as Lillian Selberg’s (Fy., Minneapolis) cross found Annika Lewis (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) for a goal. The Gusties held possession for most of the second half, outshooting the Scots 7-0 in the final 45 minutes.

Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) earned the shutout win in goal, making two saves.

“What an incredible way to honor our seniors,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. “Our eight seniors have made a lasting impact on this team and program. Over the last four-plus years they have grown as players and leaders and here we are clinching a home game in playoffs. The grit, tenacity and belief our team has shown over the last month to win six conference games in a row and claim fourth in a very competitive MIAC is inspiring.
“Today we played well for the entire game, but really turned it on in the second half. We controlled the tempo of the game, defended very well as a full unit and had some exciting attacks. What proved to be the lone goal of the game was definitely one for any highlight reel. A great cross from Lillian and an unreal one time finish by Annika. I think it’s safe to say everyone at the game has replayed that goal in the mind many times.
“Again, we are so proud we were able to pick up the win, cinch fourth and honor our seniors all in one day. Starting Sunday, our focus is back on us and our match up against a strong Augsburg team on Monday.”

Gustavus finishes the regular season 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the MIAC.
