Cross Country Finishes Top-Five at UW-La Crosse

Both the Gustavus men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the top-five at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational on Friday. The Gustie men took fifth out of 23 teams with a score of 131, while the women placed fourth out of 20 with 137 points.

WEST SALEM, Wis. – Both the Gustavus men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the top-five at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational on Friday. The Gustie men took fifth out of 23 teams with a score of 131, while the women placed fourth out of 20 with 137 points.

UW-La Crosse won both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The men were led by Andrew Stumbo (Sr., Boone, Iowa) with a fifth place individual finish out of 380 runners. He crossed the line in 24:59.12, which is the fourth-fastest 8k time in program history, just 13 seconds behind the record held by Sedge Freeman in 1996.

“He looked human for the first time this season and that shows a lot about his potential,” Head Coach Brenden Huber said of Stumbo.

Garet Grant (Sr., Winona) took 20th in 25:30.24 and Bryce Knutson (Sr., Owatonna) finished 23rd in 25:38.0. Grant’s time is 16th in program history.

“Both Garet and Bryce had beautiful days,” Huber said. “Overall, it was a really good day for the men.”

Casey Olson (Sr., Harmony) rounded out the team scoring with a 49th place finish in 26:17.0 Henry Hinchcliffe (Jr., Austin) was right behind in 50th at 26:20.16. The men had 21 lifetime personal best times out of 29 runners.

The Gustie women were led by Elizabeth Donnelly (Sr., Langely, Wash.), taking 17th place in 22:46.21, tied for 42nd in program history. The next three Gustie finishers crossed the line in a pack as Lily Engebretson (Sr., White Bear Lake) took 25th in 22:57.57, Evelyn Villalobos (So., Crystal) 27th in 22:59.97, and Mackinzee Miest (Sr., Saint James) 28th in 23:03.97. Aubrey Mair (Fy., Waconia) completed the team scoring with a 69th place finish in 24:04.70. The women had 12 lifetime personal best times out of 19 runners.

“The top four ran together through the five-k and it was great pack running for the ladies,” Huber said. “There were a lot of good thing today as we took steps forward. We played with the big dogs and even though we hoped to be closer to those top teams, we trust that we have the ability to place higher moving forward. Now we focus on fine tuning so we have our best effort in two weeks.”

The Gusties compete at the MIAC Championships on Oct. 30 in Northfield, Minn.
