SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team hosted Saint Mary’s for a Tuesday afternoon matchup where the Gusties took a 1-0 victory. With the win, the Gusties move to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

“I thought we played an absolutely beautiful game today and maybe 1-0 doesn’t tell the entire story,” said Head Coach Tudor Flintham. “Minus the second goal we were just fantastic and finally played an entire 90 minutes with class, poise and intensity. The guys addressed some really important concerns and just locked in on the information and game plan. The coaching staff are really proud of the effort today and we fully deserve three MIAC points against a very resilient, organized and hard working team. Corbin is doing a fantastic job there and it’s only a matter of time before they upset some big hitters. We just have one more really important piece to add to our game right now… and we’ve got a feeling it’s only a matter of time before it comes. Hopefully Friday.”

The Gusties got on the board at the seventeenth minute mark when Otis Anderson (Jr., Minneapolis) dribbled two Cardinal defenders on the end line, passed it to Scott Heinen (Sr., Aurora, Ill.), and found a wide open Cole Schwartz (Jakarta, Indonesia) into the bottom right corner of the net. Gustavus had a couple good looks but could not convert and carried a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Despite multiple opportunities for the Gusties to add to the lead outshooting 17-3, an impressive Saint Mary’s goalkeeping performance would hold Gustavus to the one goal win.

Wesley Sanders (Urbandale, Iowa) was credited with the win making three saves on the shut out.

The Gusties are back in action when they host Central on Friday with a 4 p.m. kick-off.
