SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Carleton on Saturday. The loss was the first in conference play, as the Gusties dropped to 1-1 in the MIAC and 3-3 overall.
“Today we thought we showed ourselves very well, controlled the tempo of the game for large swaths and truly showed who we are as a team on the field,” said Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie “The score line was unfortunate for how well we felt we played, however it’s also a learning opportunity for us — it’s not just about playing well, but also finding the grit and courage to get the result as well. Wins are hard to come by in the MIAC which makes the MIAC fun yet frustrating. We reflected well after the game and are poised to use this as a stepping stone towards our next game.”
The Knights grabbed momentum from the start, as Casey MacVaegh scored the lone goal of the contest just over eight minutes in. The Gusties outshot Carleton 7-3 in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Knights extended their lead to two goals as Lily Hurtubise beat out goalkeeper Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) at the 78’ minute mark.
Katie Ashpole (Sr., Chaska) registered a team high three shots on goal. Gustavus finished the game with 14 shots compared to Carleton’s 5. Goodno recorded one save on the afternoon while Mookencherry made eight.
Gustavus will next be in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on Coe College.
