WAVERLY, Iowa. – The Gustavus women’s golf team finished day one of the Wartburg carding a 299, the second lowest in program history after day one of the Wartburg Fall Invitational. The team scored two strokes behind the 2008 record and sits tied in second place behind St. Catherine.
“I’m so proud of the tremendous start the women had today,” said Coach Randall Stuckey. “They were extremely relaxed, showed many smiles, and were committed to their shots. That has to be in place for having all seven shooting scores in the 70s and finishing a team score of 299, the second lowest 18-hole round by a Gustavus Team only being bested by a 297 in 2008. It was great watching such good play today, but especially from Laurel Ward (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) who shot even par. She made a bunch of par putts in the 10 to 15 foot range. Her putter was really hot. The key today was concentrating on having fun and being totally committed to what was in front of us. Before the round, we talked about the significance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and what a privilege it is for us to be at a great college, having the opportunity to play in a great golf program lead by Coach Scott Moe, and to enjoy everything we have been given, especially being with some great friends. We hope the fun continues tomorrow by finishing the tournaments strong.”
Ward currently ranks tied in fourth overall in the tournament is followed in the lineup by Sydney Regalado (Sr. Rosemount) who shot 75, Emily Kratz (Sr., Edina) and Erin Ericson (Sr., Onalaska, Wis.) both carded 76, and Annika Reierson (So., Delano) finished the day with a career low 77.
