COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team traveled to Colorado to face off against the Tigers and took a 2-1 overtime loss. With the loss, the Gusties move to a 0-2 record.
Both teams came out strong on defense. Gustavus brought the offensive advantage outshooting Colorado 6-4. Owen Johnson (So., Apple Valley) kept the Tigers on edge with two close calls however both teams entered the second half scoreless.
Just a minute into the second half, Raphael Cattelin (Jr., Edina) handed off a pass at the top of the box to Cole Schwartz (Sr., Jakarta, Indonesia) to score for a 1-0 lead. Colorado put the pressure on and scored off of a free kick, tying the game with ten minutes remaining. Despite multiple scoring opportunities for the Gusties to end it, the match went into overtime.
Six minutes into the third frame, Colorado scored on a free kick from the top of the box for the 2-1 final. The Gusties finished with 13 shots to the Tigers 12 and out kicked on corners 5-2.
Wesley Sanders (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) was handed the loss after making two saves and allowing two goals.
