WAVERLY, Iowa- The Gustavus men’s soccer team traveled to Wartburg on Wednesday and fell by a score of 2-1. With the loss the Gusties fall to 0-1 overall, while the Knights move to 1-0.
“I think the team went in there with a bit too casual of an attitude,” said Head Coach Tudor Flintham. “We just need to take better care of the little things, win individual battles, and work harder for the next game.”
In a match that went shot for shot for the majority of the first half, Wartburg was able to find the back of the net 28 minutes into regulation. The Gusties closed out the first half outshooting the Knights on goal, 4-2.
Half number two played back and forth with the teams trading chances. The Gusties found their groove when Cole Schwartz (Sr., Jakarta, Indonesia) delivered off a cross pass to the back post from Nolan Garvin (Sr., Batavia, Ill.) to tie up the game with 14:29 remaining. The Knights capitalized on a free kick from outside the box to take a 2-1 lead. Despite solid passing efforts the Gusties were not able to erase the deficit and finished with a 2-1 loss.
Wesley Sanders (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) got the loss in the net, making two saves while allowing two goals.
